Downton Abbey is fantastic. English gentry, servants, pretty costumes and sets, flawless acting by many, including Maggie Smith, and soap opera-ish plot intersecting with actual historical events? It's a television series that is tailor-made for me!
So pretty! It's a pretty quick watch too. I watched the first season on PBS's website. It was shown on PBS in January/February of this year, but is available for streaming again because of the series' success at the Emmys. And the second season is currently airing in the UK, so thank goodness for the Internet, because I don't think I could wait until next year for PBS to show it.
The series reminds me of a slightly more soap opera-ish version of Mad Men. It's not perfect, but more interesting than a lot of the things on American television right now. There are the standard unrequited lovers, but there are also some interesting storylines concerning the profession of "serving" in British society. The second season is taking place during World War I, which I think is intriguing because I have watched so few depictions of WWI on TV and also because it seems as though WWI was as similarly transformative to British society as the 1960s were to American society, especially in terms of class. I also (almost ashamedly) found all the conversations about heirs, entails, and Lady Grantham's money to be interesting. I guess being forced to read all those old English cases about property and wills was not for naught.
Basically, I love it. And apologies in advance to tumblr because nearly all the posts in my tumblr queue are about Downton Abbey!

2 made a huge mistake.:
I'm so glad that you love it, too! OMG when does season 2 air?
I feel so bad for the middle sister...
Season 2 doesn't air in the US until January, but four episodes of season 2 have already been shown in the UK. Might I suggest here if you are interested? And they're making a Christmas special! Also, I didn't realize that PBS had cut 25 minutes from Season 1 when it made the 7 ITV episodes into 4 PBS episodes, so I had to go back and re-watch the entire series.
Edith, yeah, she's clearly not really appreciated by anyone. Maggie Smith is constantly making me giggle. Her delivery of "What is a weekend?" is amazing.
