It appears that instead of actually publishing that much-talked-about encyclopedia, J.K. is simply going to place all the information about her Potter universe online, in a game-like format.
Press releases note:
"In an announcement which will thrill fans, she described how she has brought to life both the Sorting Hat and Ollivanders experiences from her books for the first time on Pottermore, by revealing the questions asked by the Sorting Hat - which places newcomers into their Hogwarts houses according to their characteristics - and the magic behind the Wand Chooser – which finds the right wand for each user from over 33,000 possible combinations. She also revealed glimpses of the new information she has provided on some of the best-loved characters."
AND
"From Professor McGonagall's love for a Muggle as a young woman, to how the Dursleys met; from new information about Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff houses, to details about wand wood, the fresh Potter background from the author already stretches to 18,000 words, with more to come."
I say, AWESOME. Almost (but not quite, I think) better than a printed encyclopedia because this won't cost me money AND I get to be sorted. Properly.

So, you can sign up at the website now, though it isn't yet live. On July 31st, there is an all-day online game and then a lucky few people are selected to have access to the site while it's in beta. Then, the site goes live for everyone in October. There's quite a cute video at the website (where these animations are taken from) where J.K. explains it all.
Also, apparently she once wrote a short PREQUEL(!) to the novels that was auctioned off for charity. Somehow I missed this when it happened years ago so I read it for the first time yesterday. It's here and adorable.
