Like Sleepygirl, I was intrigued about the Large Hadron Collider that was first put into use today. I know that much of the media here has been about how it could create a black hole and we will all die, but I wondered what the French were saying about it since it's on their border and all.
So, I made my way over to France 2 and read their article. Although they do make one mention about how there has been some controversy about whether black holes will be created, the focus of the article is on what the collider is, what it will do, what it should discover, how much it cost, and how much better the French are than the rest of the world for helping to create this machine and having it built under France. OK, maybe I made the last one up, but you know they are thinking it.
But, the thing that fascinated me was the nearby article which was about Hurricane Ike. Did you know that the French word for hurricane is ouragan?
Every time I see that word, my mind reads it as "orangutan".
So the headline:
Les autorités du Texas se préparaient à l'arrivée de l'ouragan Ike, qui a déjà fait 70 morts en Haïti et 4 à Cuba
I read as:
Texas authorities prepare for the arrival of Orangutan Ike, who has already killed 70 in Haiti and 4 in Cuba
It's like a sequel to King Kong!

3 made a huge mistake.:
Curse you, Orangutan Ike!
You are not as devastating as Orangutan Galveston, but you are uglier!
Orangutan is a surprisingly hard word to spell, I've suddenly discovered....
Yay for crazy French news and false cognates! They make my life bearable.
