Backup

Late Thursday night (actually Friday morning, just after I posted the last blog entry) my computer froze. I didn't think anything of it, it's happened before, so I just rebooted the system. It froze again. Another reboot and another frozen screen. So I booted up Safe Mode, ran a spyware scan and then a virus scan. Halfway through the virus scan, the computer froze again. I tried system restore TWICE and ended up both times with the Orange Screen of Death.

Thus, today I made my annual pilgrimage to Geek Squad. The Geek!Tech was able to diagnose it as a software issue since I could still do most of the basic functions in Safe Mode. He asked me if I had made backup discs, but my blank stare told him everything. So, he advised me to call HP/Compaq and have them send me reboot discs. Which of course means that I will lose all my files. However, Geek!Tech told me that since Safe Mode worked, I could still access the files and get them off myself (to have them do it would be $99.99!) Problem is, I don't have anywhere to put all my videos/music/files. I think I'm going to have to buy a portable hard drive. So, question: do any of you have a portable hard drive? What kind of model/maker? Do you like it?

To make myself feel better, I am watching figure skating (I am SO excited for the Olympics) and I made cauliflower soup (recipe here). The Pioneer Woman said it was a comfort food, and I have to tell you, it's delicious!

3 made a huge mistake.:

BART has something called a Mac Store. Its bigger than mine.

I have also been contemplating getting an external hard drive. You definitely would want a plug and play one, not one that comes with software or anything. It'll say plug and play on the box. Everything I have read has been all over the Seagate FreeAgent Go. It's plug and play and gives the best bang for your buck. When I have money again, that's what I'll be going for.

Also, color choices! I don't know how much space you need but it goes all the way up to 500 GB. Which is way more than I would ever use.

The only bad things I've heard about it are from people who want it to do more things than I do. I just want to back up my pictures, music and documents. These crazy kids are storing programs on it. It has a program that you can use to make it sync with a couple different folders (like an iPod) but syncing always freaks me out and I really would just drag and drop things anyway.

Oh and you don't have to safely remove it on Windows or anything.

Thanks for all the info!

I went and bought one tonight and ended up with this one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8761903&type=product&id=1202650704851&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=8761903

More than I was going to spend, but we had a coupon for 15% off.

Thanks for the tip about looking for the words "plug and play" on the box, Rachel. There is no way that I would have been able to install software onto my computer, if that had been required. I looked for the FreeAgent Go hard drives, but they had been pretty well picked over. There must have been a recent sale or just hordes of people who desperately needed external hard drives.

It's obviously the latter.
